Have The Emmys always felt like this? Like nothing? It’s something to think about as we bid adieu to another year of moneyed millionaires dressed in haute couture tearfully accept their gold statues…that said, I am on my period.
Anyway, even in darkness there is light, so here were a few moments that the Emmys had me almost forgetting about my cramps.
1. Gael Garcia Bernal & Diego Luna Presenting In Spanish
These two have had a chokehold on me ever since Y Tu Mama Tambien, and it’s disgusting. But seeing Diego Luna present award in Spanish, without English subtitles, in the US of A, awakened in me something completely new.
2. Hannah Einbinder’s Mum’s Deleted (Racist???) Tweet
Hacks actress Hannah Einbinder’s famous mum, Laraine Newman, tweeted FUCK. THE. BEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! when her kid was beaten out by The Bear’s Liza Colón-Zayas, which, LOL.
She then got royally called out on Twitter for pooping her pants over a 50-something Latina woman bagging the award instead of her nepo baby daughter, which was hilarious. Newman has since deleted the tweet.
I don’t even know whose side I’m on, I’m just glad it happened.
3. D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai’s Statement For Missing And Murdered First Nations Women
The 22-year-old actor Reservations Dogs actor D’Pharoah Woono-A-Tai attended the Emmys with a red handprint over his face, a symbol of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) movement in Canada.
According to Native Hope, the handprint “stands for the silence of the media and law enforcement in the midst of this crisis. It stands for the oppression and subjugation of Native women who are now rising up to say #NoMoreStolenSisters."
The same crisis is endemic to Australia: the deaths and disappearances of First Nations women rarely make headlines here, and many cases remain unsolved. A senate inquiry has taken place, but many are saying that it’s failed to hold anyone to account.
4. John Leguizamo Is Rooting For Everyone Latino
I don’t really know who this man is, but I really enjoyed his sense of pride and shout-outs to the Latin American nominees in the audience, including Nava Mau of Baby Reindeer and Only Murders In The Building’s Selena Gomez.
The recipients of Leguizamo’s hat-tips looked genuinely moved, and so was I. I wonder what the South Asian version of this would look like? If it’s got to be Hasan Minhaj rallying the troops, I don’t want it.
5. Jelly Roll Singing Live For The “In Memoriam” Segment
Is it not a bit weird to have Jelly Roll belt out a suicide awareness song for the Emmys’ In Memoriam segment? Most of these people died due to natural passage of time, not suicide.
Anyway, I’d be so embarrassed to be dead to Jelly Roll.
